Wednesday, August 11, 2010

There will be light in the night sky on Thursday night.

The Perseid meteor shower, resulting from debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, is one of several such events that occur each year.

The showers result from Earth passing near or through dust and rock fragments of a the comet as it continues to circle the sun its orbit.

Peak activity will occur from about 10 p.m. Thursday until dawn on Friday, according to a news release from the Carnegie Science Center.

Those who wish to get a good look at the shower should stay away from city lights and look northeast in the sky. Maximum activity with exceptional skies during the Perseid meteor shower is approximately 50 to 60 meteors per hour, according to the release.
