People: Gosselin sextuplets aren't being exploited
Friday, July 23, 2010

Pennsylvania's labor department is defending its decision to issue work permits to Kate Gosselin's sextuplets for the reality show "Kate Plus 8."

A statement from the Department of Labor & Industry says the children are not being "unlawfully exploited" by the filming at their home in Wernersville.

State Rep. Thomas Murt questioned the permits last week, saying Pennsylvania law allows children under 7 to work in movies, but not TV. Gosselin's sextuplets are 6.

Labor officials said Tuesday that the permits protect the children from working too many hours and ensure they receive earnings from the TLC show.

Murt maintains the permits are illegal. He says the labor department must seek a ruling from the attorney general.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie accepted undisclosed damages Thursday in London's High Court to settle a privacy claim against a British tabloid that had reported they were planning to split, the Associated Press reports.

The celebrity couple began legal action against the News of the World after it reported in January that they had agreed to separate. The pair argued the newspaper had made false and intrusive allegations in saying that they had planned to divide assets worth 205 million pounds ($320 million) and had made arrangements regarding the custody of their six children.

"When the News of the World failed to publicly retract the allegations and apologize for them - thereby leaving their readers in the dark as to the true position - the couple felt they had no alternative than to sue," the couple's attorney, Keith Schilling, said in a statement. "Today's victory marks the end of the litigation brought by Brad and Angelina."

The newspaper confirmed that a settlement had been reached, but declined to comment further.

The movie star couple did not attend the hearing.

Michael Lohan has been charged with second degree harassment for allegedly attacking fiancee Kate Major, TMZ.com reports. Lohan will be formally arraigned on Aug. 18.

Major filed a report with the Southampton Town Police Department and told police in her official complaint that Lohan threatened to kill her.

"My fiance Michael Lohan came home while I was sleeping in a sofa chair. He woke me up, yelling, 'Why didn't you pick up your cell phone, you stupid [expletive]," she claims in the report.

The complaint continues, "He then turned over the chair while I was still in it, tossing me to the floor. I crawled to the other side of the room to get away from him. He walked over to me, took his shoe off and kicked me in my face while I was still on the ground. He stood over me and said, 'I'm going to go back to jail 'cause of you, 'cause I will kill you.'"

Major claims Lohan's abuse stems from his fear that she would leave him.

Lohan has been in Los Angeles this week to take part in the media blitz surrounding his now-incarcerated daughter, Lindsay. He told TMZ that there was a dispute between he and his fiancee, but Major "invented" the domestic violence story because she needs money. Major, who resigned from Star magazine after beginning a relationship with Jon Gosselin, quickly moved on to Lohan.

"She has no money, no job and she's been living off of me for the last 8 months ... and her dad just cut her off," Lohan said.

In an official statement released to TMZ.com, Lohan's lawyer Lisa Bloom claims, "Michael Lohan 100 percent denies each and every one of Kate Major's allegations. He has never threatened to harm her, never assaulted her, and never physically abused her in any way. Kate was heavily intoxicated during the verbal argument between Michael and Kate in the early afternoon on Monday. Michael Lohan has been clean and sober for six years. Michael Lohan is fully cooperating with the police investigation. No charges have been filed. He expects to be fully vindicated."

If Lohan fails to appear, the judge can issue a bench warrant for his arrest.

Jesse James has been working overtime to win back ex-wife Sandra Bullock, and now sources tell Popeater.com all his efforts have paid off.

"Sandra has made it clear that Jesse is the love of her life," a friend of the actress told Popeater.com. "She's not the sort of lady that just stops loving someone, no matter what he did behind her back. Sandra misses him and their life together every single day. You have to remember Sandra raised Sunny [Jesse's 6-year-old daughter] as her own for the past five years. Packing her school lunches, brushing her hair, reading her bedtime stories. Sandra even took care of Sunny while Jesse was getting help in rehab."

Sandra and Jesse have been in constant contact since the day in March that Sandra left, however, sources say that recently their conversations have been less and less about the children and more about the two of them and everyday stuff.

"Jesse has made her smile again. She can finally have a normal conversation with him again without focusing on the pain and anger," a friend of Sandra's says. "She really is the most amazing person you will ever meet. Her heart is big and open; holding onto anger makes you bitter and twisted and that's not and never will be who she is."

Sandra's friend says Jesse has been charming the actress with stories of mundane tasks he's been undertaking at his new home in Austin, which happens to be just 16 miles from her Texas digs.

In her first interview after the split, Sandra made it clear how important Jesse's children were to her, saying, "I don't want to know what life is like without those kids." And now that the court has approved Jesse's petition to let him take Sunny away from her biological mother, Janine Lindemulder, Sandra won't have to.

Jesse and Sunny, as well as his other children, Chandler, 15, and Jesse Jr., 12, will all relocate to Austin, just minutes away from the place Sandra calls home. And with Jesse's new workplace, a motorcycle shop just steps away from Walton's Fancy & Staple, a deli and grocery that Sandra owns, they will be seeing even more of each other.

Stay tuned.

The chief prosecutor of the war crimes tribunal for Sierra Leone says Naomi Campbell will testify next month at Charles Taylor's trial, the Associated Press reports.

Prosecutors want the supermodel to say whether Taylor gave her a rough, or uncut, diamond as a gift in 1997.

The court issued the order forcing Campbell to testify after she avoided prosecutors for a year and made it known she had no wish to be part of the case.

Prosecutor Brenda Hollis said Thursday that Campbell will testify on Aug. 5 instead of July 29 as previously scheduled.

Taylor, the former president of Liberia, denies prosecutors' allegations that he provided arms and ammunition to brutal rebels during Sierra Leone's civil war in exchange for so-called blood diamonds.

Court records show Kevin Costner has dismissed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against a music promoter he claimed failed to back his music career, the Associated Press reports.

Court records in Los Angeles show the lawsuit against Mahee Worldwide Ventures Inc. was dismissed last week. The filings do not offer any additional details and an attorney for Costner and the company did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

The 55-year-old actor-director sued in April 2007, claiming Mahee reneged on a deal to book the Kevin Costner Band for as many as five shows a year and maintain a marketing website.

The case had been long-delayed because Mahee filed for bankruptcy. Mahee's bankruptcy attorney did not return an e-mail message seeking comment.
